Adkins was brought up by a single young mother in various working-class neighborhoods of London. She loved to sing contemporary pop music as a child and was adept at playing the clarinet and guitar. She came across Etta, a mid-century rhythm-and blues vocalist, in her teens, and started to consider a career as an artist. She was in an institution for secondary education in the performing and visual arts that was funded by the federal government. A friend of mine posted songs Adkins had composed onto Myspace. The music she wrote and recorded eventually caught the attention of record companies and, in 2006 about a year after her graduation the school, she signed a contract with XL Recordings.
